The latest expert advice on creating and maintaining your personal routine

One of the more useful things to adjust to working from home that helps to stay mentally sharp is to create a routine that you can stick to and that will help break up your day.

In this post, we will layout the steps to create your own personal routine and how to ensure it sticks

  1. Make a list: First, write down everything you need to get done daily, both in your home life and at work. Don’t worry about how you organize this list; this is a brain dump, not a to-do list. Most people gravitate towards a morning routine because mornings can feel like such a struggle, but a night routine is also beneficial if you want to stop staying up too late.

  2. Find your motive: Think about why starting a routine is important to you. What’s your motive? Why are you trying to create a routine? Is it because everyone else says how important it is? Is because you want to get more done? You want to make time for a hobby or idea?

  3. Get specific: Within these loose outlines of each part of your day, you can get as specific as you want. Think about your current routine and what you do on a daily basis. Is there anything that you could spend less time doing or remove completely?

  4. Add some goodness: Think about what you’d love to add to your current routine. Is it practising yoga in the morning? Making a smoothie? Reading before bed? Make a list of 8-10 things you’d LOVE to add. Then narrow that list to 3-5 things The point is to harness your most productive times to use for your most challenging tasks, and your least productive times to do the more mundane tasks.

  5. Test drive your new routine Take your new routine for a test drive for 15 days. How does it feel? I’d recommend writing down your new routine and keeping it in an obvious spot where you’ll see it and be reminded of your intention

You will find some routines are easier to follow than others, but establishing even a small routine can be quite useful and provide a sense of accomplishment in your day.

Hope you found the above points useful. If you have anything to add to this or tips that you found worked for you in creating your routine please add them in the comments below.
